Supporting Black Women-Owned Home Businesses

Supporting small businesses has always been important to us on both a personal and professional level. We firmly believe that even though our team of five people is small, where we spend our dollars makes a difference.

We are taking inventory of where our business spends money, the sources we share and doing research to diversify our vendor portfolio. These seven home businesses, all owned by Black women, are added to our vendor list and we’re eager to source them for upcoming projets.

Bolé Road Textiles | @boleroadtextiles

Brooklyn, New York based designer Hana Getachew started Bolé Road Textiles inspired by the colorful and graphic patterns of handwoven Ethiopian fabrics. Hana was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She was raised surrounded by traditional Ethiopian textiles and her designs pay homage to the cultural significance and influence on her design aesthetic and life.

Clare | @clarepaint

Entrepreneur and interior designer Nicole Gibbons is making painting easy and healthy. She has transformed how paint and painting supplies are shopped for, sampled, purchased and delivered. Clare Paint products are zero VOC and GREENGUARD Gold Certified, making it the healthiest option for your home.

PUR Home | @purhomeclean

Angela Richardson started PUR Home to develop natural laundry and household cleaning products. PUR Home products use raw plant-based materials and come in compostable/recyclable packaging.

Studio Nom | @studio.nom

Fiber art beyond macrame. I am loving this modern geometric wall art to add texture to a space. I am checking her Etsy shop daily to scoop up her handmade art that is completely sold out! After 12 years in the Netherlands fashion industry Nom took on a new creative journey of weaving fiber art.

Soap Distillery | @soapdistillery

This company’s products are the perfect gift! Danielle Martin is the founder of Soap Distillery, a handmade soaps, candles and body products company in Chicago inspired by crafted cocktail favorites. Her mission to promote industry diversity and commitment to sustainability makes us big fans.

Mitchell Black | @mitchell__black

Wallpaper has made a huge comeback the last several years and we’re always excited to find new sources. Lynai Jones’s Mitchell Black wallpaper company has a large variety of styles including colorful, subtle, natural fiber, grasscloth, peel and stick, and more. I adore this bold Cayenne Stalking Tiger wallpaper in a contemporary Parisian style space.

Design Dua | @shoplovedua

Coretta Owusu’s company, Design Dua, makes handwoven and dyed baby bassinets, changing baskets, and other baby items in Ghana. These products are absolutely gorgeous products for the little ones in your life. They comply with U.S. safety standards and are made using organic, vegan materials. I cannot get enough of this photo!

Sourcing is one of the more difficult elements of our job. As much as our clients support our small business, we are being more vigilant in our efforts to pay that support forward with our dollars.

Does anyone have other recommendations we should add to the list?

All the best,

Katie Miller + Jkath Team
