Some kitchens arrive quietly.
This one walked in with fresh baked cookies, a stack of well-thumbed cookbooks, and a whole lot of character. And we’re thrilled to unveil our beloved Maiden Rock project, just across the state line in Wisconsin, overlooking the bluffs of the St.Croix on Lake Pepin.

Today we’re revealing a project that hits every Jkath button in the best way: heirloom materials, intentional storage, thoughtful circulation, and that lived-in warmth that only natural finishes can bring. A kitchen designed to age gracefully; much like the homes we’re trusted to reimagine alongside our clients.

This space balances contrast and calm, marrying rich black-stained oak with soft, character grade white oak cabinetry, and one breathtaking stone that ties it all together.

The Heart: A Show-Stopping Stone Story

This kitchen focused on the natural quartzite, an early decision with the entire space planned around this selection. The dramatic, swirling quartzite has characteristics of warm ochres, cool stormy blues, soft charcoal veining, and a natural movement that feels almost hand-painted. It’s a work of art.

Custom Cabinetry: Heirloom Craft With Modern Function

A combination of three unique finishes, all playing off another, for statement making moments, and contrasting charm. The base cabinetry is a character grade oak with a water base finish. The base drawers have a horizontal wood grain pattern, that adds visual interest. All custom cabinetry is built in our Minnesota cabinet shop.

The island, a known workhorse in this space, is also a wood grain, rift white oak for durability. Stained black for drama, and hiding the imperfections once this space gets to work. Let’s not overlook the open storage on the range side stacked with copper pans and utensil storage. Cooking simplified.

The upper cabinets are painted in Benjamin Moore Smokey Taupe, the perfect off white to unify this space, allowing natural light to pour in with the newly added, taller kitchen sink windows.

The Range Niche: Where Function Meets Art

A 48” Wolf Dual Fuel Range sits centered beneath a custom integrated hood, framed by the show-stopping quartzite backsplash. We added recessed niches with slim oak shelves, just enough room for everyday essentials without cluttering the countertop.

This little moment proves that utility can be beautiful when edited with intent.

Lighting: Sculptural Yet Simple

Soft globe pendants echo the round forms repeated throughout the space bowls, hardware, even the details within the stone veining. Island pendants to petite sconces over the sink provide accent lighting and decorative accents we just love. Troy Berg Petite Flush Mount – these are too great not to share.

The Sink Wall: Calm, Clean, and Made for Everyday Living

A deep single-bowl stainless sink nests under a bank of new windows, the kind that make you linger while rinsing greens or chatting with a friend over morning coffee.

Faucet: Perrin & Rowe Armstrong Bridge Faucet in unlacquered brass. Tile: 3 x 9 Ceramic Gloss Tile by Fireclay.

    A simple open cubby with solid-oak shelves breaks up the symmetry just enough to feel personal.
