Drew Ave Project Mudroom + Powder Room Reveal
Adding a mudroom and powder room into a main floor plan are amongst our most requested items on a renovation wish list. For everyday use these spaces are a game changer.
So far in the Drew Ave project reveal we've walked you through the kitchen, dining room and living room, as well as a special Live In the Details® feature to get the look throughout. Today's reveal post wraps up the main floor with two highly functional, highly detailed spaces: the mudroom and powder room. In the Drew Ave project both rooms were added to the main floor plan in the back of the house with an exterior entrance, right off the kitchen.
Modest sized older homes are typically laid out to have people enter the home in a corner of a back kitchen or in the middle of the living room, creating a funnel to get everyone inside. Mudrooms are a larger informal dedicated space for the family to enter with outerwear storage, a place to set backpacks and contain the mess brought in from outside's adventures. In #DrewAve we combined the laundry room into the mudroom for ultimate functionality.
The Jkath custom cabinetry allowed us to maximize every available inch for storage, down to the quarter inch. The laundry side of the room has ample closed storage, spanning all the way to the 9' tall ceilings, for every cleaning agent under the sun and seasonal outerwear storage. The Kraus USA Turino fireclay apron front sink is a statement piece and creates such an elevated look to the laundry area.
It was fun to use a bit moodier palette for cabinet color in here compared to the kitchen with Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray. We love the wood bench and shiplap that tie into the adjacent powder room. Some homeowners are wary about putting wood (even engineered) flooring in mudrooms, but adding a large area rug (low pile wool recommended) will help protect against water and salt.
Tucked into the mudroom is the delightfully surprising powder room. The near-black vertical shiplap is my favorite, a deep contrast to the rest of the light and bright home! Having a window in this space allowed for the dark wall color and trim to not be as daring of a decision, allowing for natural light to flood the space during the day.
See how the powder room ties into the mudroom lockers with the vertical shiplap and white oak vanity? The white oak vanity creates a warm middle ground to transition the white and gray hexagon floor tile to the Benjamin Moore French Beret walls.
The Delphine wall sconce is one of my favorite light fixtures in the house. It adds a playfulness to the moody space.
