Custom Cabinet Series - The Mudroom

We've shared our kitchen cabinet and bathroom vanity series, now we're moving into the Midwesterners dream space, the mudroom. Our most frequently added room in every remodel, and request from almost all of our city clients. How can we add a mudroom?

A few things to consider when adding or redoing a mudroom:

1. Mudrooms are always a great space for custom cabinetry, often these rooms require unique storage solutions and custom design/fit for your space. This is also an area where kids spend a lot of time and this space will see a lot of use.

2. Keep in mind the outdoor weather conditions where you live, often this has a huge impact on how this space will be used. Should you use tile or hardwood flooring? We're a fan of both, but also like to add in floor heating to mudrooms (that being said you can only add this under tile or engineered wood floor).

3. These are often smaller spaces, so have fun with this room. Use a more moody color palette (also disguises some of the dirt and grime from the outdoors), add a fun wall covering, explore unique hardware options (stay tuned for our #drewave reveal, this mudroom is a MN'sotan dream)

Our most recent project reveal is our #goodrichtudor in St. Paul, MN. It's a great place to start as we incorporated warmer wood tones for the base of the cabinetry. We did this for a few reasons, first to add contrast to the newly updated refinished floors and secondly, we wanted an element of practicality. With the kicking off of boots, the harsh winters we have ahead, we knew this space would benefit from the longevity of a wood base over a painted base that would require maintenance in years to come. You'll also notice we allowed for taller open cubbies at the base, for the winter boot storage. Open storage rather than closed storage always seems to feel more practical in these spaces.

Hardware: Pottery Barn, Classic Knob and Pitted Hook.

Josephine Place saw a huge transition, as this was once a galley style kitchen, can you believe it? We relocated the kitchen into a newly added space to this colonial style house and made the previous kitchen into a much needed mudroom and drop zone space.

Cabinet Color: Benjamin Moore, Narrangasset Green.

Hardware: Rejuvenation, Mission Drawer Pull in Burnished Antique.

Our Lake Harriet whole house renovation is very customary to most city homes in terms of layout. An open front entry, with minimal yet functional storage solutions and a rear entry with a more formal built in storage solution.

Cabinet Color: Benjamin Moore, White Dove.

Hardware: Rejuvenation, Large Mission Drawer Pull in oil rubbed bronze.

The Frontenac Place was inspired by the need to incorporate max storage in a small space as well as a space to sit down to put winter boots on and off. We accomplished this, as well as sneaking in a formal laundry space too!

Cabinet Color: Benjamin Moore, Blue Note.

Hardware: All Modern, 128mm pulls in golden champagne.

Our earlier stop to Goodrich (separate from our recent Tudor project), also a whole house renovation hosts a lovely and quaint mudroom space we snuck into the rear corner of the home. Just enough space to keep the outer garments out of the kitchen!

Color: Benjamin Moore, White Dove.

Hardware: We found similar initial hooks on Anthropologie. Grey ones similar to the ones above, and Colorful Monogram hooks available.

This is our Gambrel Creek Addition, where we worked with Kathy Olmstead. She was the Architect and Interior Designer on this project. We were able to get a few iPhone pictures when wrapped this project up back in November.

Hardware: Pushka Home via Etsy, Wooden Door Knobs in Oak.

This simple lower level entry, is from Alison Way. This is space serves as space to store a few coats and shoes while their upper level houses their fully functional mudroom.

Every midwesterner knows how important a mudroom is. Our clients are no exception. We love collaborating with clients and learning about their needs. The best part about this job, is no two houses are the same and each home has it's own design and function needs. What are your mudroom must haves?
