Opening Up the Kitchen to the Light

Tucked away on a serene wooded lot, this midcentury home holds a story that began in 1975, and now continues with a thoughtful remodel of the main floor. Our clients came to us with a clear goal: modernize the original kitchen while honoring the character of their home. With strategic changes to the layout, removing a wall and an original window, we opened the kitchen to the adjacent dining and living spaces, allowing for better flow and more light. The vaulted ceiling windows, once hidden, now shine as a focal point, casting natural light from the living room into the kitchen.

Seamless Sightlines, From Every Angle

The homeowners’ favorite result? A panoramic view of their refreshed kitchen from every space. From the dining room to the living area, each vantage point celebrates symmetry, clean lines, and layered textures. By relocating the structural load with a concealed steel beam, we created uninterrupted sightlines and a natural connection between gathering spaces, perfect for hosting or quiet evenings at home.

Material Moments We Love

Designing within a mid-century shell meant striking a balance between old and new. We leaned into earthy tones and natural materials: skinny shaker cabinet doors in a warm alder finish, brass accents, and quartzite and soapstone countertops. Urbane Bronze by Sherwin Williams provided just the right depth on painted cabinetry; grounded, tactile, and timeless design. A custom alder alcove hood anchors the range wall, lending both function and architectural interest.

The Otto Solitaire Flush Mount is a favorite lighting detail in this space, paired with the Piatto Large Island Pendant.

Creative Solutions: The Coffee Station & Island Details

One of our most exciting design puzzles? The built-in coffee station, which required extending past the vaulted ceiling in the dining area while preserving flow and proportion. The result is a niche that feels like it was always meant to be there. And a reeded glass display cabinet on the Alder stained v-groove island offers a beautiful moment of texture and contrast, designed and built in our local Minnesota custom cabinetry shop.
