How to Choose Window Treatments with Calico

Selecting window treatments can feel like a tall task. There are many options on the market, choosing what’s the best quality, has design longevity, and works best for your home and family’s needs. We recently partnered with Calico to select new window treatments for my dining room/sitting area. Calico’s professional team of designers, measurers, and installers were friendly, fast, and easy to work with to choose the right product for this space. Here is how to choose window treatments.

First, why are window treatments important? There are several variables to consider when choosing window treatments.

1. Blocking Sunlight – filtering light through your home has more benefits than simply keeping the sun out of your eyes or darkening the room. Blocking sunlight through certain parts of the day creates better energy efficiency and UV protection to your finishes and furnishings.

2. Finishes the Space – window treatments have a way of making a space feel complete. Whether shades or curtain panels, window treatments make a big finishing difference!

How to Choose Window Treatments

1. Evaluate Your Needs

First, it is important to determine the needs for the space. In our dining room/sitting area, there were a couple features on our wishlist. First, this room faces West so we get lots of direct sunlight around dinner time. However, we didn’t want to sacrifice the views to our backyard. Of course, no dangling cords that would pose as a safety concern for our young son, so some type of cordless system was a must.

If you’re unsure of where to start, Calico offers in-home consultations with expert designers so they can see first hand the concern and resolve.

2. Schedule a (Free) Designer Consultation

I visited our local Calico showroom in Edina, Minnesota, where the designer experts walked me through the Hunter Douglas offerings to find the best solution for our home. The opportunities are endless at this showroom! The beautiful fabrics and trims to make one-of-a-kind window treatments is on my wishlist for future projects. To make things even sweeter, the luxury service to meet with a designer is absolutely free!

Ultimately, we landed on the Hunter Douglas Designer Banded Shades in Dobby – Coconut Milk, the exact ones on display at the showroom. One the two larger windows I upgraded to SoftTouch Motorization.

What I love about the Hunter Douglas Designer Banded Shades is that they offer versatility for full or partial sun filtration while maintaining the views of our backyard. Upgrading to SoftTouch motorization has been a real luxury for us, and our son loves to watch them glide down!

3. Schedule an In-Home Measure

After we nailed down the selection, the local Hunter Douglas installer came to measure each window, ensuring these custom window treatments got the perfect fit. If you already know which window treatments you want without a free designer consultation, you can go straight to scheduling a measure.

In a couple short weeks after the measurement, the same installer came back out to install the custom Hunter Douglas Designer Banded Shades.

4. Enjoy!

With the assistance of the Calico team and Hunter Douglas installer, this process was incredibly smooth. It truly is a one-stop shop for Hunter Douglas and custom window treatments. From selecting the right window treatment for our home, visiting the showroom, scheduling measure and installation, the communication and process was very quick.

Thank you to the Calico team for creating a transformation in our home!
