This season, we’re sharing tips to enjoy your outdoor or transitional spaces this season. We’re including design tips for renovating, and decor ideas to carry your home through the next several weeks of living.

Screen Porch Season

It’s not too late for screen porch season. Are you familiar with the vinyl vertical window solutions? This beats the cost of real windows and the hassle of removing windows and adding screens seasonally. Our Drew Avenue project was our first installation, and we have since added these to the Kath Home porch, and additional client projects.

The windows are intended for year-round use, blocking rain, wind, and snow during the off-season and protecting your furnishings, while offering tinted options to control sunlight during the warmer months. The windows are on a 4-track, so easily glide up or down to expose the screens, and more durable than real glass. If there is one consideration for your future screen porch, this is it!

In both applications, we used Sunspace Sunrooms, but we know there are other options that are great solutions on the market.

Consider a Wood Paneled Ceiling

Also, a common element we used in these spaces is a wood paneled ceiling. Adding a cozy vibe, an extension of the outdoors, and timeless elements to the home. We source all of our reclaimed timbers from Manomin Resawn Timbers, a women-owned lumber yard in Minnesota. Must Have Gas Fireplace

When building our own family home, we knew a gas fireplace was a must. This extends the use of our screen porch for several weeks on both ends of the season. And a perfect way to enjoy a Saturday afternoon nap, with a blanket a fire in the background. You’ll need to plan ahead and consider height constraints with a TV above the fireplace if this is in your plan. A non combustible surround, such as a natural stone, brick, tile or in this case hardy siding, will be a requirement as well. Print your fireplace specs, or make sure your builder is on it while planning for a fireplace and its components.

A Mix of Outdoor and Indoor Furnishings

Our Drew Avenue project opted for an outdoor set purchased retail. We love the look of this as it feels like indoor furniture, but will have the outdoor capabilities when the screens are open. It’s also a great way to save on your furnishing budget, while leaning into seasonal decor. In the Kath home, we were able to put vintage pieces from our previous home onto our porch, added, comfort, protected from the winter climate with our screens, and peace of mind knowing we kept a few items out of the landfill.

Accessorize With Rugs, Throws, and Pillows

Rugs are a great place to start in each space, these selections are durable and can be used inside or outdoors on your patio. Sharing a few favorite area rugs here to set the tone for your space, by laying the groundwork for additional furnishings and accessories.

Don’t forget to grab favorite throws and pillow covers. We like to purchase covers separate from their inserts, for ease of changing out throughout the year.
