Behind the Scenes: Small Bathroom with Big Design

The lower level guest bathroom at the Westbrook Road Phase II project is almost complete. Once the final details are installed we will seamlessly move onto the main level master bathroom for a dramatic transformation.

We completed a dramatic kitchen renovation at this mid-century modern home in Golden Valley in 2019. In the next phase of the home renovation we started by gutting and transforming the lower level guest bathroom.

Master Bathroom

The master bathroom is small in size but will be BIG on design. The homeowner had big ideas and inspiration for this room to tie into the custom features in other areas of the home, but also to boldly shine on its own. Similar to the kitchen renovation the master bathroom is going to be filled with thoughtful, highly detailed selections.

A romantic quartzite from Terrazzo & Marble Supply will be installed on the three walls of a shower/bathtub. The quartzite has great natural movement throughout the stone and has a beautiful coloring with a soft dust rose and blush throughout, balancing charcoal and ivory, and veins of deep crimson.

To hold up to the blush quartzite burnished brass plumbing fixtures from the Henry collection by Waterworks will be in the shower and vanity. The vanity top will also have the same quartzite as the shower, and a floating white oak vanity underneath. Our cabinet shop will incorporate custom trays within the vanity drawers for easier, multilevel storage and a clean exterior with integrated finger pulls in place of hardware.

Guest Bathroom

The guest bathroom, located in the walk-out lower level of the rambler style home, is almost complete. The showstopper of this space is the custom sink console and top. The design board below is not the exact sink and console, but helps paint the picture. Streamlined black legs will be the base for a true Italian Carrara marble top. Jesse carried the marble top into the home like a 75 pound newborn baby. It’s heavy and delicate. Brizo Jason Wu wall mounted faucet is the perfect complementary piece.

Montaggio in Minneapolis really helped us to bring in the treasured elements, such as the Waterworks fixtures in the main level and custom console sink in the lower level.

The timeless black and white color palette is going to last generations. Simple 4×4 white shower tiles will be framed by a contrasting glass and black framed shower door with modern knob instead of a handle.

I cannot wait to see the final result of both of these bathrooms. They’ve been a labor of love and keen attention to detail. Stay tuned this summer for the reveal.

Stay Well,

Katie Miller + Jkath Team
